Tasty Tuesday: Healthy Lunch Box Ideas

I know it is WAY too early to think about “healthy school lunches”, right?  BUT these are also some great ideas to use for trips to the beach or the park or even those outdoor activities this summer.

I never thought of Belinda as a fussy eater, she just knew what she wanted and it was one battle I did not want to fight.  So for lunch was usually carrots and dip or peanut butter and no jelly.  She wanted nothing to do with anything “green” but she did like “finger foods” for lunch so baby carrots were always good.

I’m sure some of you have a problem getting your kids to eat healthy.  Although I think it is a little easier these days.  Thanks to Thirty One for these yummy ideas!  We’ve searched far and wide to bring you the most delicious snacks you can easily swap out to boost your kids’ nutrition. (And they’re all perfect to pack in our colorful and hard-working insulated lunch bags!)

Swap out PB&J for a PB&B

We all remember pulling a pale, squashed PBJ out of our lunch bags as kids… with that dark purple splotch of jelly seeping through the soggy white bread. (Bleh.)  I loved it BUT Belinda didn’t do jelly.  Why not give your kids a healthy sammie worth celebrating? A peanut butter and banana sandwich on whole wheat or put it in a wrap.  It is packed with 17 g of protein, 7 g of fiber, complex carbs and healthy unsaturated fats. This combo can help kids feel full and energized throughout the afternoon.  Slicing up half a medium banana instead of spreading on two tablespoons of jam adds potassium and cuts out 10 g of sugar! You can even layer in sliced strawberries for a touch of sweetness and a big dose of vitamin C.

Swap out juice boxes for a reusable water bottle

Single-serving drink boxes are convenient and fun, but many also contain artificial color, flavoring and preservatives. Even 100% fruit juices can contain up to 20 g of sugar per pouch!  Instead, try infusing a pitcher of water with citrus slices, torn fresh herbs or muddled berries at home. Combine together herbs and fruits (like strawberry-basil or blueberry-mint) for a refreshing change of pace. Leave your pitcher to infuse overnight in the fridge and pour into a leak-proof water bottle.

Our roomy new Lunch Buddy Thermals feature an elastic-topped mesh side pocket that’s perfect for toting the kids’ water bottles to school and back each day. (And the fun prints are irresistible!)

Swap out applesauce for apple slices

Packing a large, sliced apple instead of a cup of applesauce can double your kids’ fiber intake (5.4 g vs 2.7 g), boost their vitamin C (10.3 mg vs 2.7 mg) and provide them with the beneficial antioxidants contained in the skin of the apple.  Kids love to eat raw apples plain as a healthful snack, or dip slices in a delicious nut or seed butter for added protein and a salty kick. If you want to keep the convenience factor, toss in a whole apple or nab a segmented slicer tool to make quick work of lunch prep.  If you do decide to sometimes opt for applesauce, look for healthier varieties made without added sugar or artificial preservatives. Or make your own unsweetened applesauce, and be sure to leave the skins on!

Swap out chips for nearly anything else

Do your kids crave something salty to go with their meals? (Us too!) Steer clear of the fat, sodium and calorie bombs that are potato chips, which have been scientifically linked to weight gain, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.   Instead, why not offer your kids one of these tasty (and nutritious) treats?

  • Roasted pumpkin seeds
  • Deli turkey-wrapped cucumber slices
  • Nuts (Be sure to check your school’s allergen policy first)
  • Edamame, boiled or shelled and roasted
  • Air-popped popcorn (It’s a whole grain!)
  • Cheese cubes
  • Whole wheat pretzels
  • Celery sticks with nut or seed butter and raisins, or with cream cheese and dried cranberries
  • Swap out pudding cups for Greek yogurt
  • Kids love spooning up creamy treats at lunchtime. But when you’re packing their lunch bags, think Greek: While the calorie count and amount of calcium are essentially the same, a serving of Greek yogurt can provide as much as 20 times the protein of an individual pudding cup.

Stick to plain Greek yogurt for the least sugar, and add sliced berries or a little honey for sweetness. If the kids want the flavored kind, choose one with sugar near the end of the ingredient list: The first three ingredients should be milk, live and active cultures and fruit.

Keep their yogurt – and the rest of their healthy food swap-outs – cool until lunchtime in a classic Thermal Tote personalized with your child’s name and favorite embroidered Icon-It design. Your kids will be eating healthy and noshing in style!

What is your kids’ favorite lunch?  Share it with us…. Have a ThirtyOne-derful day!

Make the Most of a Staycation

Thank you Moscato Mom for inspiring this post….

As a single mom of a competitive cheerleader, vacations were usually tied to cheering competitions out of state.  Always a lot of fun but not very relaxing.  We were always on the hunt for budget-friendly options.   Today, they are know as “a stay cation” and are often dreaded!   Honestly, we live at the shore, who wants to stay at the shore with all of the “shoobies”.

Check out some awesome ideas for having the best staycation this summer.

Camping

This was not an option for a LONG time when my daughter was little.  She was definitely a hotel and room service kind of girl.  Then she went camping with one of her best friends and her mom.  Despite some hiccups, she had a good time.  Camping memories are some of the best for me growing up.  There are many great sites for camping at a low cost in our area. Some of them even offer it for free! You could even pop up a tent and camp out in your backyard. Camping is a great, cheap way to enjoy the outdoors with your family this summer. Don’t forget to pack the makings for s’mores!

Beach

Pack up the family, the swimming gear and the sunscreen and head to your local beach! Living at the shore, this is not on the tops of my list since everyone else is headed this way.  When we lived in South Jersey, we used to go to the Bay or the Lake.  Most cities around the country have lakes that allow for swimming, fishing, boating and relaxing at the beach. Fill a cooler with lunch and snacks and just spend the day enjoying the water and the sun.

Museums

This was definitely not for us ….If hanging out in the heat is not your favorite thing to do during the summer, you can still have some fun in your local area without spending a ton. Check out your local museums. You can walk around in a nice air conditioned building to beat the heat while having fun learning about history. Admission to most museums is only a few dollars!

Pretend you are a “shoobie”.  Are there some new restaurants in town you haven’t been to yet and would like to try? Are there some local parks you haven’t been to before? Another great staycation idea is to spend the day exploring your town. Go to some parks, take a long walk, try out some new local food, grab some ice cream cones, whatever your heart desires. This will possibly be one of the more pricey staycation options but it is far less expensive and stressful than traveling.

Movies

Another option for beating the heat this summer is to head to the theater! A lot of new movies come out during the summer months so it is a really good time to go. Check your local theater’s websites for coupons to save on tickets and snacks. Another alternative to going to a movie is to attend a live-action play. Check out your local playhouse to see what their current productions are.

What is your best “staycation” idea?

Have a ThirtyOne-derful day!

Is your Business Swim Suit Ready?

Everywhere I turn, people are on a mission to get “swimsuit ready”.  We start thinking about the warmer weather around Easter, by Memorial day the reality hits, by mid-June school is over and then July 4th – the official start of summer (at least on the East Coast) SMACKS us in the face.

I know I shutter at the thought of bringing my winter body out of hibernation and squeezing it into pieces of nylon and spandex.  Despite the weight loss there is still a lot of skin.  I actually fit in last year’s suit just not happy about the excess skin hanging around.

I know, what does tho have to do with getting your business ready for summer, right?

If I’m being completely honest, I actually love being in the water and have ever since I was little (young not size – LOL).  I just let the way I look and what people will think take over.  So I usually avoid the pool or sit on the sidelines all covered up worried about what others will think.

Think about your business for a minute.  As a direct seller, I have always heard “the J months are the worst” and yes I have talked about it ALOT!  We send encouragement to others and share with our teams, to face their fears, put themselves out there, not worry what others think and to serve people even when it seems scary or uncomfortable.  But do we practice what we preach?

What would we be teaching them if we just hid and never put ourselves out there? Think about all the missed opportunities we would have.  Think about the other people who may see you and think, “If she can do it so can I.”

To be brutally honest – just like your body (or at least mine), your business may never be swimsuit “Ready”.  You will probably always have doubts, insecurities, or even question if people will look, stare, and point at you for thinking you can actually ROCK your business.

The bottom line is you have a passion for what you do.  You have people to serve. There are people who need you – yes, they need exactly what you have to give RIGHT NOW not when everything is 100% perfect.

Because let’s face it… nothing is ever going to be 100% perfect.  Are you waiting for perfect?

We have two choices in our business AND this summer:

1) We can sit on the sidelines watching the rest of the world having fun, making memories, launching businesses, and serving others.

OR

2) We can STOP waiting for perfect.  We can suck it up, put our businesses out there and ROCK it stretch marks and all!

Start today putting your business out there, whether it’s perfect or not.  Be a walking billboard with your products.  Start connecting with other people, growing and serving. We aren’t getting any younger and you’ve got a lot of people who need your voice and your message!

I know, I get it – you still feel like your business is not ready, right?  Share with us what’s holding you back.  Let us be your cheerleaders!

Have a ThirtyOne-derful day!

How to Use a Key FOB

15492430_10157996432940220_4274787403261287329_n-1Happy Monday!

The Monday before Christmas when all through the house…..

How would you finish this sentence?  Is it the calm before the storm?  Are you on the hunt for your keys?  Are you excited to be escaping to work to avoid the mess at home?  Are you still trying to figure out what to get for people? Or are you done with holiday shopping and ready to get organized in the new year?

Today is about a simple inexpensive solution to some every day challenges…

Thirty One’s Key FOB is so much more than just a key chain.  Yes, it is perfect for your keys because you can hook them onto your purse or on a tote when you go shopping.   Or hang them on a hook when you come in the house.  Or slip it on your wrist so you don’t drop them when you are carrying lots of things. BUT have you every thought what else you could use it for?img_0564

Have you ever entered a public bathroom and there was no hook on the door for your purse?  The moment when you can’t figure out what you are going to do.  I HATE putting my bag on the floor – why not use a key fob?2728e237e1312b943ad88a27b3959f11

Even if your keys are on the ring, you can still use it.

I know it is a little cold for the beach BUT for some it is never too early to plan (or dream of warmer weather).  Use your Key FOB to hold your beach bag up off the sand.993005_10201146835493588_1487965717_n

Do you have hair ties all over the house but can never find one when you need it?  Enter Thirty One’s Key FOB.15350673_10157990540680220_59723519602815727_n

Going grocery shopping – child in the seat and the basket full of groceries?  Use your key fob to  hold your Essential Storage Tote or other reusable grocery bags.  Or use it to hold your purse or diaper bag.

Do you spend a lot of time in the car?  Ever had to stop short and your purse topples to the floor, contents all over?  I’ve had it happen more than once and occasionally something will roll under the seat and I won’t know it until I go to find it later on.  Use a key fob or two to attach your purse to the head rest to create a no spill solution.  15439902_10157990546665220_7830337468885004380_n

I love this one but it would definitely NOT work for the fur grand babies we have – they are way too big.  Walk two dogs at the same time without having two leashes to get them tangled up in.

One of my customer’s favorite uses for a Key FOB is as a gift for a teacher or coach.  A simple gesture to let someone know you appreciate all they do for you.

So a key fob is so much more than just a keychain.  It has a multitude of uses and here is a list of 31 uses:
