Throwback: Warm Water and Lemon

This post first appeared in my blog on March 23, 2015.  I have shared it multiple times since them.  I still do this every morning (even when I am away).

Over the holidays (okay, so maybe before, a few pounds started to creep back on.  I was no longer at my Weight Watcher’s goal weight and I was discouraged.  So, what is a girl to do?  I re-joined online with Weight Watchers and am embracing the new program.  I am now in my second month and it has been a struggle.  I could give you a million excuses but the truth is I haven’t been motivated.  I have been accountable though so I figure that is a step in the right direction.

One of the things I slacked on was drinking my warm water with lemon first thing in the morning.  Yes, before my coffee.  Yes on a totally empty stomach.  For those who don’t know the wonderful powers of this combination, I will admit I didn’t either until an episode of Dr. Oz.

To say the least, I was skeptical it could help my IBS or my hunger or anything. Then came the second confirmation this could work.  We were at the doctor discussing some new meds for IBS. Doc suggested something natural many of his patients were trying – it worked.  Okay, I am game at this point.  Guess what it was?  YUP – warm water and lemon first thing in the AM.

Okay, if one person says it is a duck – you question it.  If two people call it a duck, there is a possibility.  If 3 people say it, guess what?  It is probably a duck.

I heard this saying for years when I was in my early years of recovery.  So, I some bought lemons at the store to try this exact thing.

How to Energize Your Team

75180fcabf8643899e3de2c802445da0The Monday before Christmas has arrived……
Are you running around like a nut doing last minute shopping? Are you cleaning the house, cooking and baking for the guests arriving this week? Are you chilling out because you are totally done?  I much admit I am doing some last minute shopping…

In the midst for those of us in direct sales, life can be in flux.  Maybe the cut-off for holiday delivery has passed.  Maybe you have been pushing for weeks and just want to take a break.  Maybe you are already in planning mode for next year so you have written off the next two weeks.  I have experienced each of these over the last 6 years and honestly, the results come January have been a little scary.  I woke up this morning thinking “My January calendar is empty, what am I going to do?”.

Yup, doubt and fear crept in but were quickly pushed aside as I thought about how my team must be feeling.  Many of them are experiencing their first holiday “crash” change of catalog season.  What about your team?  Are they tired of the doldrums?  Do they need an infusion of new energy?

I am going to share with you 5 ways to energize your team which have helped my team over the years:

  1. Send some happy mail… just because. Include confetti, stick some candy in a tube and bling it up with stickers or rhinestones and let them know how much they mean to you.  ANY chocolate is always a favorite.
  2. Invite them to participate in a special training with you or another successful person from your upline, outside professional trainer, or person within your company.
  3. Have a fun game night to just have fun together and really get to know each other. You can do it potluck style or have everyone bring toppings for banana splits and you provide the bananas and ice cream.   If you are watching the calories… invite them for a spa night of foot soaks, facial masks, and lots of laughter.game-night
  4. Revisit their why and form new personal success plans. You can even offer some extra personal attention and coaching.
  5. Offer a challenge or work toward a common goal. Some fun challenge ideas might be to:
    • Beat Your Best Week or Month
    • Have a Mystery Gift Drawing. Let your team earn tickets for each Income Producing Activity they accomplish.  Have several prizes to keep it fun.  Vary your prizes… even through in a few booby prizes or gag gifts.

Spring is right around the corner… take the time to lighten up, have fun, and do some things together!

Believe it or not, relaxing and having fun together will get the creative juices flowing which will result in growing your business.  What kinds of things do you do to energize your team?

Can Your Businesses Survive A Move?

Tips to keep small businesses up and running during a moveA week of relaxing and being unplugged, left me thinking about many things.  Tops on the list was my business – crazy, right?  The slow pace of North Carolina is great for reflection but it also got me thinking whether or not my business (or yours) would survive a move to a new location.  There are many military families who have mastered transitioning to new locations…. would you be able to tough it out?

Then I thought what if I used the same simple steps in energizing my business where I am, I would use if I was moving.  So, I hunted down some ways to make moving easier but I could also use to re-energize my business.

3e6332606ee54ae595bec5c1ffa47c8f#1 – Create a plan.  The plan should include lots of lists with things to do.  This is easy for me since I am forever making lists to ensure things get done.  Outline what has to be organized, and coordinated.  Consider everything – large and small thoughts.  This is also considered a brain dump.  You know when you get everything out of your head so you can begin to put things in order.  Include a timeline whether realistic or not.  Detail every aspect and when it should happen, then share it with everyone (family, or friends) on the team.

#2 – Plan where everything will go. When moving your business to a new location you want to plan where everything will go before you get there.  If you are trying to re-energize your business, why not do the same thing.  Pull everything out of your office.  Yup, I mean everything.  Then think about what you absolutely need to run your business.  Clean up the hot mess – okay, I know I am not alone.  Don’t hesitate to toss out the things you don’t need. You wouldn’t wait until your business is at a new location to begin organizing, so why are you putting off cleaning your office now.

69b572d1830640da815a3d66610f71c0#3 – Stay productive.  Moving you business to a new location is usually done during off hours or days, right? So why would you do non-income producing activities during peak business hours?  Are your everyday documents and data in a spot where you can access them if you don’t have computer access?  Honestly, I was grateful I use Google Docs for most of my everyday items.  While we were away, I was able to still do business while I was on my phone and internet service was spotty.  10421165_992666417439177_6682368440352179781_n#4 – Moving is an opportunity to declutter.  I mentioned this before but it bares repeating.  You actual can save time and money by doing this when you move which makes the moving costs lower.  So, when re-energizing your business why not use this as an opportunity to innovate or upgrade.  Maybe replace an old, uncomfortable office chair. Clean out those desk drawers.  Put only the things that you need all of the time on your desk, in arms reach.

#5 Make a Business Announcement.  When you move, you let everyone know where you are, right?  Many os us think “everyone knows I sell ___ (fill in the blank).  The truth is what you think and the perception of others may be totally different.  Update your online profiles, including your business Facebook page, your personal LinkedIn account, your company blog and website, and all your social media accounts.  Act as if you are just starting a new business or moved, let the world know what you are doing… share but don’t sell.

So, who is ready to refresh and re-energize their business?  What are your best tips for re-energizing or moving your business?

Cheerleaders VS Naysayers

“Stop hating yourself for everything you aren’t. Start loving yourself for everything that you are.” ~Unknown

We all have negative thoughts that stop us dead in our tracks.  They can kill our happiness and drain our self-confidence.  Did you ever notice that the trail those negative thoughts take depends on who is around us?

When we are in public, we can “fake it till we make it”.  We can squash those negative, stuffing them down deep.  They are like a kettle waiting to boil.  We push ourselves to smile, laugh and engage in conversations.

Then when we are alone or start to confide in others, two things can happen.  First, those thoughts start to boil to the surface with lots of “should’ve”, “could’ve” or with comments like stupid, fat, dumb entering our head.   The simmer turns to a boil and we are drowning in negativity.  You share those feelings and you get  more negativity or your feelings are discounted. Strengthening the inner gremlins instead of defeating them.

Or, the second scene is my favorite. Are lives are filled with cheerleaders who help us to defeat those inner gremlins.  Those who help encourage us through good times and bad.

Are you surrounded by cheerleaders or naysayers?

10192142-Illustration-of-Cheerleaders-Showing-Their-Trophy-Stock-Illustration-cheerleaders-cartoon-kids

Think about the people in your life that are your cheerleaders. Cheerleaders are people who’ll rah rah you when you’re up, and who will bolster you when you’re down.  Make a list.

Now, think about the Naysayers.  This are the opposite of your cheerleaders.  Can you list 5 people in your life that are a Negative Nellie?  Yes, write them down too.

I love this quote by William Gibson:

“Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure you are not, in fact, just surrounded by assholes.

Look at your lists.  Think about how you feel about YOURSELF when you are around the cheerleaders versus the naysayers.  Who would you rather surround yourself with or have in your life?

Are there some people that are on both lists?  Yes, one person can be a cheerleader in one area and a naysayer in another.  Maybe they support you in your personal life BUT when it comes to your dreams or desires in business, they become Doubtful Debbie (or Dan).  Maybe they support your business but are highly critical of your ability to be a parent or wife.  Hopefully, you don’t have many that are on both lists.

Does the list make you a little nervous because some of the people you love (maybe even live with) are on the naysayer list?  I remember that feeling and I was scared!  I mean how could I not be around these people.  I knew that I needed to protect ME so that the inner gremlins that were lurking in the shadows did not grow into full fledge monsters.  I did that by taking baby steps and yes, some of those people are still in my life.

We ALL need more cheerleaders in our lives.  Think about the people who energize you.  The people who make you feel good when you are around them.  It is time to add more of these people to your community.  Maybe it means stepping out of your comfort zone and meeting new people.  Maybe it means building that relationship with someone you met.  The end result as you begin to do this will be that the naysayers will begin to go away.  Okay, it may not be as easy as that but it will happen.  Those that are sitting on both sides may change to being just on one list – hopefully, a cheerleader.

As you increase your confidence and squash those inner gremlins, the naysayers will not want to be around you.  They may write you off as “you’ve changed”. Or they will attack your ability to be a friend.  The truth is that they will look outside of themselves for the problem instead of looking at themselves.

When you clear away the naysayers that are filled with criticism and negativity, the truth can shine. You’ll learn to appreciate your unique strengths and attributes.  You’ll feel happier instead of  being a prisoner of those inner gremlins.  You will SPARKLE!
