How To Make Fabric Scrap Ornaments

Thank you Vickie Howell and Thirty One for today’s blog post.  I think I have just found the perfect use for those retired fabric swatches.  New angels on their way….

If you don’t know Vickie Howell, you definitely need to check her out!  She  is a TV host, designer, ambassador and entrepreneur in the DIY space. She has LOTS of great tips on her website!

Here is a great way to use those sewing scraps and leftover fabric pieces (or if you are a consultant – those retired fabric swatches.  This is a fun indoor activity for the kids, too.  Let them design their own to give as gifts this holiday season.

Raid your closets and find some fabric scraps – you know the ones you were saving!  We never want anything to go to waste. Admit it, crafters – you have a spot in your closet just like this! I might even have more than one!  Here is what Vickie came up with as a fun way to give old fabric scraps and swatches new life as sweet home décor or heartfelt gifts.

Follow the steps below to decorate your own Christmas tree, fireplace mantel, front door wreath or dining room table centerpiece with ornaments handmade from materials around your home!

Materials needed:

  • Clear plastic bulb ornaments (get them online,  at your local craft store or even the dollar store)
  • Scraps of fabric, trimmings and/or yarn
  • Scissors
  • Decorative ribbon
  • Optional: Glitter, buttons, sequins

How-to:

  1. Gather scraps and cut them into different lengths. (1″-4″ pieces work great!)
  2. Organize scraps and other trimmings by color family.
  3. Get creative! Combine a small handful of scraps from the same color family – or create your own palette – and insert them into a bulb.
  4. Tie a decorative ribbon onto the bulb’s wire loop for hanging.

Wrap your ornament in a little tissue paper and pop it into a Thirty One Little’s Carry All to give as a gift.  Small in size, but big on benefit, it is  the perfect solution for organizing the little things in life. From office supplies to eating utensils and cosmetics, this caddy helps keep your life in order by keeping everything right at your fingertips. Great for a gift basket, small toys, crafts, office desk supplies and wrapped candy.

How to Energize Your Team

75180fcabf8643899e3de2c802445da0The Monday before Christmas has arrived……
Are you running around like a nut doing last minute shopping? Are you cleaning the house, cooking and baking for the guests arriving this week? Are you chilling out because you are totally done?  I much admit I am doing some last minute shopping…

In the midst for those of us in direct sales, life can be in flux.  Maybe the cut-off for holiday delivery has passed.  Maybe you have been pushing for weeks and just want to take a break.  Maybe you are already in planning mode for next year so you have written off the next two weeks.  I have experienced each of these over the last 6 years and honestly, the results come January have been a little scary.  I woke up this morning thinking “My January calendar is empty, what am I going to do?”.

Yup, doubt and fear crept in but were quickly pushed aside as I thought about how my team must be feeling.  Many of them are experiencing their first holiday “crash” change of catalog season.  What about your team?  Are they tired of the doldrums?  Do they need an infusion of new energy?

I am going to share with you 5 ways to energize your team which have helped my team over the years:

  1. Send some happy mail… just because. Include confetti, stick some candy in a tube and bling it up with stickers or rhinestones and let them know how much they mean to you.  ANY chocolate is always a favorite.
  2. Invite them to participate in a special training with you or another successful person from your upline, outside professional trainer, or person within your company.
  3. Have a fun game night to just have fun together and really get to know each other. You can do it potluck style or have everyone bring toppings for banana splits and you provide the bananas and ice cream.   If you are watching the calories… invite them for a spa night of foot soaks, facial masks, and lots of laughter.game-night
  4. Revisit their why and form new personal success plans. You can even offer some extra personal attention and coaching.
  5. Offer a challenge or work toward a common goal. Some fun challenge ideas might be to:
    • Beat Your Best Week or Month
    • Have a Mystery Gift Drawing. Let your team earn tickets for each Income Producing Activity they accomplish.  Have several prizes to keep it fun.  Vary your prizes… even through in a few booby prizes or gag gifts.

Spring is right around the corner… take the time to lighten up, have fun, and do some things together!

Believe it or not, relaxing and having fun together will get the creative juices flowing which will result in growing your business.  What kinds of things do you do to energize your team?

Have a ThirtyOne-deful day!

An Act of Kindness

11214331_10206040571006185_4197820212972492358_n

Today is Throwback Thursday and I got to thinking…. I know scary, right?

I am going WAY back to about 8th grade and freshman year in High School.  I had a good friend, A.  We spent lots of time together.  We shared secrets.  Our boyfriends were friends.  We walked to the beach almost every day in the summer.

Then my memory gets a little foggy.  Somewhere during our high school years we grew apart.  Hubby and I talked about her once in awhile, wondering what had happened to her.  Fast forward to our 40th HS reunion.  I saw her name on the list and couldn’t wait to reconnect. It was awkward at first but I wanted to hear all about her life.

In the midst of talking, she shared that she would be starting chemo treatments when she got home.  The realization that the dreaded “c” was wrecking havoc on another friend’s life hit me hard.  After the reunion, she was headed home but the thought that she was going to be going through life long chemo kept nagging at me.  I reached out to someone on the Reunion committee for her address.

I talked with hubby and we agreed that we wanted to do something that would hopefully encourage her as she traveled this long road.  I ordered the bag above and had it shipped directly to her.  I didn’t include a note – just the packing slip would be included in the box.  I wasn’t looking for accolades, I just wanted to make her smile.  I wanted her to know that someone cared.  I wanted her to know that her friendship all those years ago meant so much to me.

Then I forgot about the order.  I didn’t even get a shipping notice so I didn’t know when it would be delivered.  Then I get a “tag” notice on Facebook.  A announced to everyone that I had sent her this gift and what it meant to her.  It makes me smile even today as I think of the blessing that I was able  to give someone else.  As she started chemo, she shared how the bag was packed and ready to go.  She was taking it with her all the time.  A constant reminder of her “courageous“-ness.

Okay, so what is the point of this story, right?  It is not about selling a bag.  It is not about the thanks we received.  It is about bringing a smile to the face of someone who is struggling.  That is my mission….

The mission of my business is to CELEBRATE – ENCOURAGE – REWARD women (children too).  To bring a smile to their face when they are struggling.  To share my strength, hope and experiences that they might know that they are not alone.  It can be with a coffee/tea break, happy mail, a gift of a product, some business tips or a girl’s night out.  I want those who are struggling (and maybe don’t even realize it) to SPARKLE!

Do you know someone who could use some sparkle?  Let’s see if we can turn that frown into a SMILE!

Have a ThirtyOne-derful day!

CELEBRATE

Let's Celebrate 1

I LOVE to CELEBRATE my team.  I LOVE to ENCOURAGE them to reach for their dreams.  I LOVE to REWARD them for their accomplishments.  Monthly “happy mail” is my way of getting them to  smile.

It has been said time and time again, that simple recognition is a fantastic reward that provides continued motivation for future tasks.  Some may not be the TOPS in Sales, Parties or Recruiting.  Maybe they just do enough to stay active.  Maybe they had their first party.  Maybe they had a “non-sale” victory that they shared with you.  All of them have reason for being on my team – even if we don’t know what it is, God knows!

Top performers are typically motivated by doing excellent work and producing something that impresses others.  Yes, I do CELEBRATE my top performers in special ways – usually on a quarterly basis.  Facebook posts on their personal page, shout outs on our team page and even “special happy mail” are all ways that REWARD those top performers.

Some may say my happy mail is silly.  Others may just toss it aside seeing it as a waste of time and money to even send it.  Then there are those who need that little bit of positive encouragement…

Here are some catchy sayings:

LOOKING FORWARD TO RINGING IN THE New Year WITH YOU!  DREAM A LITTLE BIGGER, SPARKLE A LITTLE BRIGHTER AND have a ThirtyOne-derful year!

You don’t need the Luck of The Irish to help you!  Your hard work and consistency will lead you straight to YOUR Pot of Gold!  We are so LUCKY to have you on our team!

You are one of my favorite PEEPS!  I am so glad that you are a part of the Rays of Hope team!

It is Fall, and time to get a little NUTS!!!

You are a SPOOK-tacular team member!  Here is a treat without a “trick”

Each piece of happy mail includes a piece of candy, a toy from the dollar store or maybe even something they can use in their business (post its, a pen, etc).  Nothing really expensive but a nice way for everyone to feel like they are part of the team.  You never know when one of those team members could become a ROCKSTAR!

Positive feedback makes us feel recognized and appreciated.  Who do you know that could use some positive encouragement today?

Have ThirtyOne-derful day!
